Character.AI and Asiden both let you talk with AI characters. Character.AI suits people who want character chat on the web or their phone. Asiden suits people who want a companion on a capable Windows PC, with local processing and an optional 3D desktop presence.
There is useful overlap: both offer custom characters, voice and memory features. Character.AI currently offers unlimited free messaging, so unlimited chat alone is not a reason to switch. This comparison uses Character.AI’s official documentation, checked on 10 September 2026. It is not a test of which model gives better replies.
1. What are you looking for?
If your priority is a phone-friendly service where you can browse and create characters, Character.AI is the more natural starting point. If your priority is keeping local conversations on your own PC and having a companion alongside your work or games, Asiden offers a different setup.
Moving to a different app does not guarantee better roleplay, perfect memory or consistent replies. Asiden is early access, requires suitable hardware and has content boundaries. It does not import Character.AI characters or conversation history.
2. Local and service-based chat
Asiden’s local model generates replies on your PC. Local conversations and memories stay there. After online activation and setup, installed local chat, voice and vision can work offline. Updates, web searches and optional cloud features still need a connection. Read the local and cloud data guide for the full breakdown.
Character.AI’s privacy information describes how its service processes account, interaction and usage information. It also provides privacy controls and says character creators cannot see your private conversations. Service processing and another character’s creator reading your chats are different things. Asiden also offers optional cloud models, voice and vision. If enabled, the information needed for that request can leave your PC, including relevant memories or screen content. Local-first does not mean cloud requests are private to your device; see the Privacy Notice.
3. Creating a companion
Asiden has four bundled 3D companions — Mei, Lily, Jae and Sasha — with signature personalities, ten further presets and a custom personality wizard. You choose the appearance and personality separately. Memories build through conversation; changing the chosen personality is a deliberate action.
Character.AI also supports character creation, including a description, greeting and character definition, with public, unlisted or private visibility. A custom character is therefore a shared feature, not an Asiden exclusive. See Character.AI’s character definition guide.
Asiden’s 3D model is optional. Turn off Show 3D model in Settings for a chat-only experience; chat stays on screen so Settings remain accessible. You can turn the model back on whenever you like. Text and voice still work in chat-only mode.
Memory that grows with your conversations
Asiden’s long-term memory is designed to become more useful as you talk. The people, preferences and experiences you share build a richer picture of you, helping your companion pick up familiar threads and make future conversations feel more personal and connected.
Your memories stay on your PC, and you can review and manage them. What your companion knows about you can grow while the personality you chose stays yours to change.

5. Common questions
Is Asiden a free Character.AI alternative?
No. Asiden’s early-access Unlock is a one-off $10. Installed local conversations have no message allowance or monthly fee. Character.AI offers unlimited free messaging. Check Asiden’s pricing and Character.AI’s current plans.
Can I bring my existing character and chats?
There is no Character.AI import. You can describe a new personality in Asiden’s wizard, but your existing conversation history and memories do not transfer automatically.
Is Asiden an unrestricted roleplay alternative?
No. Custom personalities remain subject to Asiden’s content boundaries. Asiden is for adults aged 18 or over; read the safety page before buying.
Will it run well on my PC?
Check the Windows and NVIDIA GPU requirements. Local model speed depends on your hardware, model choice and other apps using the GPU. Turning off the 3D model stops avatar rendering, but does not remove the language model’s hardware requirements.
